How was your Easter weekend? Mine was really nice. As I told you last week, the plan for Saturday was to spend the day fishing for catfish to have for Easter dinner, on Sunday.
We were up early Saturday morning (something I hate to do on the weekend). The alarm went off at 5:00am. After the coffee, breakfasts, and lunches were made, the animals fed and last minute items were packed, we set out for a lake in Glen Rose.
It was a little chilly starting out, but the sun was up and the winds were light. We went straight to our newly discovered spot to fish for catfish. We sat for hours without a single bite.
Over the course of the day, we moved around all over that lake. Nothing was biting. Besides catfish, I fished for walleye, bass, and anything else that might have been hungry. Neither my husband nor I had one bite for 8 hours. I couldn’t see anyone else on the lake catching anything either.
It was a gorgeous day to be on the water. The sun was shining, and the temperature was in the upper seventies. There were a number of kayakers enjoying the lake, too. Several families had come to picnic and fish from the banks.
The first 8 hours passed rather quickly despite a lack of catching fish. In one last effort to find the fish, my husband suggested we revisit a spot that we have been very successful at in the past. Although we had already fishing there earlier in the day, this time the fish were biting.
In the last hour of our time on the lake, we caught 6 good sized catfish. My husband caught 4, and I caught 2. It was more than enough for the fish fry we were planning for Sunday.
On the way home, we stopped at a grocery store and found 2 nice pieces of lamb, on sale no less! We had such a nice day.
When we got home, we were greeted by some very happy dogs. Our pointer, Hank, was extremely excited. He was racing around the yard at top speed. While my husband was parking the boat, I was trying to keep the dogs away from the truck. Hank would run towards me and then start to spin in circles. I have never seen him act like this. Once, while he was spinning, he ran into my legs and almost knocked me down.
On Sunday, my daughter came to visit with us for a few hours. We had communion, and then feasted on fried catfish and barbequed lamb. Along with French fries and hushpuppies, we had homemade southern style green beans, and potato leek soup. It was all fabulous, and no one walked away hungry.
Monday was a work at home day. It was our originally planned day for fishing. I still had several projects I was trying to finish up, and we ended up down at the river for rocks. My husband took a fishing pole, and the dogs went along to frolic.
If there is one place that takes all the desire out of me for work, the river is the place. I frequently wrestle with allowing myself to have fun time/no work time. But the river is so peaceful and relaxing; all you hear is nature. It is calming and makes me want to close my eyes and breathe deeply. It really gets into me.
I did end up getting some things taken care of on Monday, but as much as I could have gotten done. In total, it was a shamefully small list of accomplishments for 3 days off of work; however, I seriously do not have any regrets. Family time, and time spent connecting with nature is nurturing to my soul.
This past week I just tried to focus on helping my daughter with some paperwork for her dad’s estate, and getting to bed on time. I did get my house clean, by the way.
And I have resolved to do something for myself, which is reading a book just for fun. I am reading the Harbinger, by Jonathan Cahn. I have heard good reviews on it, including my mom’s. I have read the first 3 chapters, and I can hardly put it down.
I hope that this weekend, and over this next week, that you find the time to do something that you really enjoy (especially if that means you do nothing at all). Enjoy life because it passes too quickly.
